The Child of HappinessA collection of poems with a range of themes, insights and reflections.
Commenting on poetry is always interesting because of the nature of the snapshots in time versus a narrative. As such, I will endeavour to outline my feelings on the various aspects of poetic literature. At the conclusion of this review I will state my overall impression.
Subject Matter or Themes
An excellent variety of themes welcome the poetry enthusiast. While a good portion relate to personal relationships, I was very pleased to see Cobets’ thoughts on other topics such as nature, the sea and war (all of which I found compelling due to the poet's place of residence). The poet is not afraid to expose the fragility of the soul in the trying times as well as rejoice openly upon the peaks of praise. Cobets’ poetry is varied between literal and figurative topics. His metaphor use is creative and in some cases, requiring contemplation and rereading to gain the full meaning and artistry of the text. Occasionally, I would get lost in the obscurity of the theme and find very little material to connect to as a reader. This can be a danger with poetry, as in our attempts to gild over events with pleasant masks, we can lose touch with the relevance that is needed for the reader’s sake. I can say this happened occasionally, but not in such a way that left me frustrated or diminished the poet's work.
Rhyme and Meter:
Cobets uses a freeform style through all of his poetry. This allows him to explore the full range of emotions without the burden of rhyme construction. Likewise, the meters of each poem are varied, as are the stanzas within each poem. The poem length of the collection is varied, without any poem exceeding a couple pages. My overall impression is that Cobets is comfortable mixing the format of his poems for effect - simple and direct pieces to longer sweeping descriptions. I found his choice of meter effective and accentuated the message being conveyed in each line.
The Art of Speech
I found quite a range of devices at work. Most of the poems were figurative and carefully crafted with imagery that often masked the underlying inspiring event. Cobets’ writing style flows well, although his English stumbles occasionally in the method of expression. His description is lively and paints the canvass of the mind in wonderful ways. I found that when prose was needed it was used to great effect which was wrapped nicely with a figurative style.
Overall thoughts on the collection:
Whenever you have the opportunity to read a collection of works from a poet, you are gaining small shards of insight into the soul of a person. For good or ill, you take the pieces and form an impression of the writer. The writing style did not allow me to presume some fictional perspective - I felt I was looking at life through the poet’s eyes. There was real honesty of the texts he included. As such, I find Cobets’ style to be very reflective, using analogy many times to express his feelings on any given subject matter. Sometimes brooding and melancholy, and later jubilant, I found the overall balance of tone weighs towards the sombre realm. Cobets’ experiences in life are varied and reflect a questioning of difficult experiences and an attempt at resolution. At times it felt almost haiku-like, minus the rigid structure. I found gems of insight embedded within his lines, many which I am grateful for.
As Cobets relates
A new day is rising
Wonderful, beautiful and peaceful,
So that I slowly allow myself to
Feel the verse of the morning.
I was kindly given a free pdf in exchange for an honest, non-reciprocal review

The child of happiness Collection of poetry edition by Stjepan Cobets Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
A Child of Happiness is an enchanting collection of short poetry.
Quotes like I have arrived at the end Of my many journeys And I don’t know if it is melancholy Or a wish to drag me to the end of the world.
Or Your picture is becoming clearer, Its every edge is getting sharper, I can feel your nearness, I can feel your warmth Destroying the icy winter in me.
And Only the photos on the wall offer a sign of him, For the sea doesn’t ask for anything And takes many people like him.
Are just examples of some of the beautiful lines found inside the collection. I would’ve liked some poems to go on for several pages, however, since the majority of poems filled one page or less. A couple of poems were only two lines long.
I particularly enjoyed the poems Stamp of Fate, The Old Man, Be Happy and Forget About Me.
The Child of Happiness, by S.V. Cobets, is a beautiful poetry collection that reaches deep into the soul. Though the author’s native language is Croatian and not English, the emotional depth of each poem comes across clearly and will be relatable across cultures. Sensual and light with themes of nature & love, yet also tinged with feelings of sadness and darker themes of heartache, pain, loss, & the casualties of war - there were many poems that spoke to my heart.
Among my favorite poems in the collection were A Thousand Years From Love, To Your Light, The Birds Of The Moon, My Threads, Morning Silence, & Asymmetry. Each of these poems has a quality of haunting beauty and sensuality that pulled me into them. While I tend to gravitate towards themes of nature, love and light - and my favorites all reflect that - there is a gravity to to them that renders these poems just as poignant as the other, darker poems Cobets included in this collection.
The Child of Happiness is a poetry book to be shared by those who aren’t afraid to feel and experience emotions as they read. A poignant collection with beautiful language that will stir your heart, I recommend it to all poetry enthusiasts.
The title is named for the poem on page 13. Apart from that the theme of the collection tends to be introspective, deep, and at times, dark. It's poetry that one must be in the right mood to read and enjoy.
Stjepan is a good poet. Quite obviously, English is not his first language, and the poems were first composed in Croatian. I personally feel that it would be a great improvement if an editor who is knowledgeable of Croatian but whose first language is English, gave it a once over. Having said that, there are a number of poems that are not as hampered by awkward translations. Most of those seem to be around the middle to the end of the book.
I Know, on page 10, stands out; piece communicating a feeling of ones own minuteness and insignificance in the grand sweep of time. A Number, page 48, is almost like a haiku, expressing the same feeling as a soldier would, on his way to battle. On page 52, You Who Are Helping Me wouldn't seem out of place among the Psalms of David -- a prayer of a desperate, lonely soul. The War, page 54, is another one along the theme of war and its ravages. A Piece Of The Sky, page 56, on a happier vein, is one of his pieces themed on love. Another love song is, What Would You Like Me To Write You?, page 92.
But I think my favourite is The Tree, on page 37 (I hope it's okay to quote) On a hill the tree / Has grown for a thousand years, / Defending itself against storms and winds, / Collecting water for dry summers. / But one winter a man remembered / That he had no fire at home / And he climbed up the hill / And he cut down the thousand years / With his axe.
